Below is a brief description of the  two major standards

NTSC (National Television Systems Committee)

The color television system used in the USA, Canada, Mexico and Japan defined by the NTSC in 1953.

Defined as 525 lines at 60 frames per second.

PAL (Phase Alternating Line)

The color coding system for television widely used in Europe and throughout the world, almost always with the 625 line/50 field system.

Defined as 625 lines at 50 frames per second.

The PAL standard was derived from the NTSC system by reversing the phase of the reference color burst on alternate lines to correct for hue shifts caused by phase errors in the transmission path.
